Launched by New
Delhi-born theatre personality Aishveryaa Nidhi (who is also the
Artistic Director of the group), Abhinay Theatre is dedicated to
promoting and popularising traditional and cultural forms of arts
and entertainment, particularly theatre, in Australia.
Most of its works, such as Gandhari (2005) and Kuntiputra Karna
(2006), relive episodes from the great Indian mythological epic
Mahabharata, in an attempt to connect the Australian-Indian
community, based so far away from its country of origin, with the
essence of Indian culture and traditions.
While at a completely different level, Abhinay Theatre, through
its plays such as Hamare Padosi (2006) also encourages Indian
community to come forward and participate in Indian theatrical
events. As part of its 2006 program, Abhinay Theatre invited
aspiring actors to come and join its month-long workshop. The top
20 promising performers in the workshop were handpicked to play
roles in Hamare Padosi.
